Research and Grower Services Division
The R&GSD, a division of CIC recognizes that it has a key role to play in creating, collecting, evaluating and disseminating knowledge for the Coffee Industry.
The Division aims to achieve GOALS through its five Multi-
disciplinary programs which are supported by a Management Advisory Team to ensure cooperation and resources are shared
and used effectively and efficiently. The programs, goals,
strategies
and
projects of the Division are directed towards
supporting the
PNG
Coffee Industry and are consistent with
the
Vision, Mission
and
Values expressed in the Constitution of
the
CIC Ltd.
The Division’s activities are focused on the needs of all coffee stakeholders are identified as demand-driven functions. These demand-driven functions are summarised as:
- Knowledge Generators: Knowledge is accumulated through both basic and field research and also arises from the analyses of field observations, extension activities and surveys.
- Knowledge Reservoirs: The Library facilities in the Division is a primary repository of coffee scientific publications in PNG and this along with the more applied skills and knowledge in the regional centres, factories and farms are vital skill resources for the Division.
- Knowledge Packages: Scientific and other information needs to be assembled into forms suitable for the coffee growers and processors. The literacy level of some producers requires information to be packaged into forms that can be readily understood by them.
- Knowledge Deliveries: Information is disseminated by the division through printed materials, workshops, field days and direct contact with producers and processors. Particular challenges arise because of the large number of small holder producers often located in remote areas with poor road access.
- Knowledge Targets: The Division has a broad clientele ranging from the small holder producer, block holders and plantations to coffee processors and exporters, as well as the public, governments and the international community.
- Knowledge Feedback: Fundamental to the Division’s work is to understand the needs of the clients. Obtaining feedback from growers, processors and the market is vital to the demand driven functions of the Division.
The RGSD has structured itself into five Multi-disciplinary Program Teams and a Management Advisory Team to achieve its goals. Individual staff members are assigned to one of the Program areas as their “home” base but are available to provide their specialized knowledge, skills and capacities to projects in other programs areas as needs arise. Thus membership of the Program Teams is flexible to accommodate the specific needs of projects undertaken by the Division. The allocation of staff to a specific project is a responsibility of the Management Advisory Team.
