Economic Research
Economic research is an important function within Coffee Industry Corporation. The CIC conducts numerous research work into the many aspects of coffee including the socio-economic aspects of coffee on the livelihood of people. All the researches CIC conducts are a key source of CIC information it captures from the industry besides the normal statistical returns it receives from all licensed coffee operators and other world market information it captures from various sources.
The findings of researches and all other information CIC collects assist the CIC Board and management to design policies and make decisions, both for its own requirements and also in contributing to the Government's national policy goals and strategies.
The Economics Section
The Economic Section of the CIC exists within the Industry Operations Division. All economic research activities are conducted from this section, however with multidisciplinary efforts in collaboration with the Research and Grower Services Division and overseas partner research institutions.
Functions
Over the years a number of impact projects have been identified and implemented by the CIC to improve the impact of coffee on common households so that the government's policy of economic prosperity is attained. These projects are then evaluated to monitor their impact toward the coffee industry. Results attained are then used as major yardsticks to determine the sustainability of these farmer-driven projects.
The research projects currently undertaken by the section include:
- Cost-Benefit Analysis of Coffee Credit Guarantee Scheme
- Assessment & Improvment of Quality Management During Postharvest Processing and Storage in PNG
- Sustainable Management of Coffee Green Scale in PNG
Data collected are stored for further analysis in other economical aspects. The results are then published in a number of evaluation documentation and statistical information reports.
