Post Harvest Research
Post harvest aspects of coffee are also an important part of coffee production. For the coffee industry of Papua New Guinea this is an important area as post harvest covers a lot of issues that result from the production of coffee. These include coffee quality improvement and coffee waste management.
The Post Harvest research section exists within the Coffee Research discipline of the Research and Grower Services Division. The section's mandate is to conduct systematic and adaptive research activities into various areas of post harvest. The results and technologies identified are then published as research reports and technical information for the coffee industry's benefit.
Functions
The main functions of the section are mainly research oriented and involve the following activities:
- Establishment of standard coffee profiling.
- Improving factory processing machineries and methods.
- Minimising incidences and impact of waste pollution on the environment.
- Developing appropriate farming processs and activities to absorb resulting coffee waste.
Quality Improvement
Research has also been focused into specific areas of coffee quality improvement so the quality of smallholder as well as plantation and blocks coffee processed retains premium quality in compliance with CIC quality guidelines. The processes involve:
- Coffee Quality profiling
- Coffee Quality assessment and database
- Quality lab Improvement
- Upgrading PNG coffee exportable grades
- Development of Extension training manuals
Processing Machineries and Methods
Research has also been focused on the type of processing machineries and related methods used in the processing of coffee so that premium quality of coffee is produced. These research activities include the following:
- Design appropriate technologies for coffee machineries
- Improve processing methods
- Development of Drying facilities
- Develop Standard Storage sheds for remote farmers
- Development of smallholder coffee processing
Waste treatment systems
Research has also been focused on the evaluation and possible treatment solutions for waste water resulting from coffee processing so that better solutions are available for farmers to use to contain waste water polution on the evironment. These research activities involve:
- Waste water database
- Monitoring of coffee waste water pollution
- Regulation of waste pollution
- Design appropriate Treatment systems
- Water Laboratory
- Solid Waste Management practices
- Standardised Waste Disposal systems
