Coffee a Way to Go for Simbu Province

“I’m giving you coffee as an alternate occupation declared the Coffee Industry Corporation (CIC) Ltd Chief Executive Officer, Mr Ricky Mitio, while addressing the crowd at Kundiawa town, Simbu Province, during the “Simbu Anti Drug Abuse Campaign’s” first anniversary.

“I am here to present to you our money tree, coffee, to provide an economic alternative to sustain your lives in the community, said Mitio.

When there is a social problem, people need to be preoccupied with an economic activity to keep their minds off illegal activities, stated the CIC CEO. Thus, coffee is here, and has always been here for us to work on and keep people on the land and away from aimlessly wandering into towns or being lured into illegal activities.

“We have to work to put money into our own pockets; we cannot wait for other people to do that for us. Do away with the “claim and compensation culture” to collect easy money. This is not our culture, our ancestors never did that, they were hard working people on the land and so should we,” expressed Mr Mitio.

Currently, the District by District Smallholder Coffee Rehabilitation Program is carried out in the Kundiawa/Gembolg District and this should rekindle the drive of Simbu people to work on coffee.

Simbu Province Governor Fr John Garia made a supporting speech urging youth to start working on the land. He announced that his government was planning to support the “Sweat Equity” concept; people must work before they can acquire financial support for their projects.

Simbu province has taken lead in promoting campaign against drug abuse. There has since seen a decrease in illegal drugs and alcohol sentence into the local gaol at Barawagi. According to the Barawagi Deputy Gaol Commander, before the campaign from January to December 2008, the number of prisoners admitted into the gaol for marijuana and homebrew were 114 and 48 respectively. Since the intense awareness of the anti-drug campaign the numbers have dropped significantly to 18 sentenced for marijuana and 12 for homebrew.
