Coffee Processors and Exporters Warned (5/10/11)

Coffee processors and exporters in the country were strongly urged to follow proper guidelines in processing and trading coffee.

Board Chairman of Coffee Industry Corporation (CIC) Ltd Mr. James Korarome and Manager for CIC’s Industry Regulation and Compliance Section, Mr. Sam Menanga expressed these during a meeting of the coffee processors recently in Goroka.

The coffee businesses were informed that they were the ones at the check-point of discouraging low quality coffee and illegal coffee trading but it appears that they were encouraging these activities to happen.

Mr. Menanga said the maximum fine for trading illegal coffee would reach up to K100, 000 and eventual dismissal of license.

“We are receiving many request for coffee processing licenses, and those who involve in illegal coffee trading or do not comply with coffee quality requirements will lose their license to aspiring coffee businesses who are willing to comply, said Mr. Menanga.

Mr. Korarome, informed the participants that coffee comes under the food category of beverage and like all food, it requires good quality and processing standards to produce a better cup.

He said the quality of coffee can be detected via the cup taste and if processors do not prepare quality coffee, it will tarnish the image of PNG coffee, resulting in low price and motivation.

The meeting was organized as part of the continued awareness on the coffee processing license guidelines to inform the processors and exporters to stick to their operation guidelines issued by CIC along with their license.
