Agriculture Extension Review in PNG (16/08/11)
Partnership among agricultural organization is vital to deliver effective agriculture research and extension services in PNG.
This was highlighted in the highlands regional stakeholder consultation meeting for the National Case Study, PNG—Innovations in Agriculture Extension and Advisory Services, organized by the African, Caribbean, Pacific-European Union Technical Centre for Agriculture & Rural Cooperation (AC-EU CTA) and NARI, at the Pacific Gardens Hotel in Goroka recently.
The objective of the meeting was to facilitate and interactive dialogue between key stakeholders, and to seek agreement towards a national consensus on the way forward for agriculture extension in PNG.
Representatives from the National Agriculture Institute, the Fresh Produce Development Agency, the Coffee Industry Corporation Ltd, Provincial & National DAL, farmers, and private service providers all agreed that agriculture agencies are targeting the same farmers with their different programs and it would be good to forge strategic partnerships to share resources and work to improve the lives of farmers.
Senior Projects Officer of Coffee Industry, Ms. Cathy Pianga, and National DAL Director for Highlands Region Mr. Mauwe Gonapa both expressed that partnerships must not only focus on provision of extension services but must also focus on forging ties with private organizations that would market the produce of the farmers derived from research and extension work.
Another meeting will be held in Rabaul on the 12th of August to gauge views from relevant stakeholders from the islands region. The first meeting was held in Lae on the 5th of August.
The review is being done by Mr. Ted Sitapai, an expert in agriculture extension in PNG, engaged by the CTA.
