Coffee Quality Training

14 rural communities of smallholder coffee growers in the major coffee growing provinces of Simbu, Eastern and Western Highlands were trained on producing quality coffee targeted for international specialty markets.

CIC’s Chief Executive Officer Mr. Navi Anis expressed that, with the growing demand for quality coffee on the international level, such training and mobilization of farmers to the international markets is important to promote PNG coffee.Samples being cup tested

The training was done by the Lae based Coffee Industry Corporation
Ltd’s Senior Quality Coffee Controller Mrs. Rose Romalus via a coffee
profiling project funded by the Agriculture Innovative Grant Scheme
under AusAid.

Mrs. Romalus said the project will assist in determining origin and liquor
profiles of smallholder coffee and link it to markets both locally and
overseas. She said the smallholder farmers desire to enter the specialty
coffee markets but they lack information on the requirements of these
high valued markets.

“The opportunity is opening for coffee growers to venture into the emerging markets driven by Organizations’ concerned for living standard of the growers believed to be ripped by middle people”. Said Rose in her report to AIGS. She said for too long smallholder growers who supply 80 per cent of PNG coffee have been receiving lower price for their coffee.

"The purpose of the AIGS project is to:

  • Identify Arabica coffee varieties grown in different coffee growing regions in the highlands and determine coffee cup profiles and liquor qualities of these varieties per region.
  • Determines soil and climatic factors specific to these regions.
  • Map out smallholder coffee profiles for PNG and link farmers to interested processors, exporters and buyers overseas.

The project includes the primary and secondary stages of processing
Kerowagi farmers drying parchmentquality coffee from the garden to producing parchment and green bean
coffee, and the roasting and cupping processes using universally
acceptable coffee quality standards and methods.

The trainings were carried out in Timuza, Tiredne and Nagamiufa
communities in the Eastern Highlands Province, Arosubamo, Mindima,
Kapmawapo, Daniel Godoga and Kerebo communities in Simbu province
and Kundkas, Paunda, Nobal Tai, Walep, Lumba, Tikil Wopkola
communities in the Western Highlands Province.
