Coffee rehabilitation, nursery and replanting programs in the Western Highlands Province has been given top priority by the Coffee Industry Corporation (CIC) Ltd to be launched hopefully in the Dei District later this month (September) under an MOU with the Western Highlands Provincial (WHP) Government signed recently.ceo and gm-rgsd signing mou

Chief Executive Officer of CIC Mr. Navi Anis while counter signing the
MOU and receiving a K100, 000 cheque from the CIC officers from the
WHP branch on behalf of the WHP Government, expressed great appreciation and acknowledgement to the WHP Governor, Hon. Tom Olga and the Provincial Administration for their initiative in building partnership with CIC to help their people.

The money was presented during the MOU signing by Hon. Olga, Deputy Governor, Hon. Wai Rapa and Provincial Administrator Malcom Culligan to Mr. Joe Alu and Mr. Henry Mamp of CIC, based in the Mt. Hagen branch on Friday 27th August 2010 at the Mt. Hagen Lutheran Guest House.

Mr. Anis said CIC will use some tool and materials from trial District by District Village Coffee Rehabilitation program of 2009 for the WHP coffee nursery and rehabilitation program and he made the commitment to launch the program before the end of September starting in the Dei Council Area and continue into other districts.

“Many government plans including the PNG Vision 2050 and the UN Millennium Development Goals emphases the need for partnership to advocate for the wellbeing of the people. In PNG, investment in agriculture is the means to improve the lives of the majority of our people in the rural areas. The WHP Government and CIC has demonstrated that via the MOU,” said Mr. Anis.

The MOU is a result of the close working relationship established between the WHP Administration and the CIC where in CIC has participated in the formulation of the province’s Agriculture Development Plans.

Under the MOU, WHP Government has indicated an allocation of over K600, 000 over five years to the coffee programs. CIC will be opening a separate account to manage the MOU funds and the CIC Program Managers will be required to provide the financial and activity reports to both CIC and WHP Government.

Mr. Anis is writing an official acknowledgement letter to Hon. Olga and the WHP Government thanking them for recognising CIC a major development partner in its provincial agriculture development plan and urged other provinces and districts to follow the example set by the WHP Government as increasingly, more money is now being channelled directly to the Districts.

He also urged CIC officers operating in the 13 provinces around the country to work closely and enter into partnership with their provincial, LLG’s and wards to initiate coffee activities in their provinces.
