Autonomous Region of Bougainville keen on growing coffee (24/05/2010)

“Those areas in the Autonomous Region of Bougainville, that cannot grow either cocoa or coconut as their cash crop, really want to grow coffee.”

Minister for Primary Industries of the Autonomous Region of Bougainville (ARB), Hon. Dominic Atta, expressed these remarks when he visited the Coffee Industry Corporation Head Quarters in Goroka recently.

He said the demand for growing coffee in the high altitude areas of ARB is very high and many people are currently returning to rehabilitate the old plantations and coffee gardens that were abandoned during the Bougainville civil war.

Hon. Atta, his Chief Executive Officer from the Division of Primary Industries, Mr. Sam Rangai and Cash Crop Re-Development Officer, Louis Nixon Agavi flew into Goroka from ARB via Port Moresby to present a draft MOU to CIC to establish a partnership with ARB in developing coffee in the region.

Chief Executive Officer of CIC, Mr. Navi Anis, warmly welcomed the visitors while receiving the draft MOU. He expressed that although CIC is a small organization in terms of resources and manpower, it has a big mandate for the country, and, would look at the draft MOU to strategise in developing coffee programs in ARB.

“ARB is a new growth area that will contribute to increase the production figures of PNG coffee and I urged the people of the ARB to take their own initiative in caring for their coffee and CIC will step in only to assist,” said Mr. Anis.

He said, coffee from ARB will likely be shipped to Lae for export until the coffee industry in ARB grows and creates the business opportunities for the erection of a coffee mill.

Meanwhile, the MOU is in its final stages of drafting and is expected to be signed at the end of this month.
