The Coffee Industry Corporation has warned coffee farmers and traders that the Regulated Cherry Trade Policy imposed by the Coffee Industry Corporation (CIC) is current & effective and operations are underway to arrest perpetrators with the advent of the 2010 coffee season.

Manager of Industry Regulation and Compliance Section of CIC, Mr. Sam Menanga, reiterated these remarks, when presenting the progressive report on the policy to CIC Management and staff at the CIC Head Quarters in Goroka recently.

Mr. Mananga said since the inception of the policy in 2007, a a total of 49 cases of illegal cherry traders have been arrested and charged in the affected highlands provinces including the newly created Jiwaka Province.

He said that cherry theft is a serious problem affecting the growth of the coffee industry in production and procession of quality coffee and urged all genuine coffee growers to use the policy to charge perpetrators and further urged staff to spread the awareness of the policy in their respective communities.

Mr. Mananga commended the various stakeholders who were cooperative and supportive in the implementation of the plan. They include among others, the police and the various levels of the Courts system.

He said the Cherry Trade Policy has been gazetted, and published in the National Gazettal Notice, No. 37 date 31st January 2007 and was declared a legal policy. The fines under relevant sections of the CIC Act 1991 used to impose the policy ranges from K1000.00 to K5000.00 for persons who are found guilty.

Further information on the policy can be obtained from the CIC Office in Goroka, Mt. Hagen. Kundiawa and Wapanamanda.
