First Wet Factory for Okapa District (29/04/2010)

The first ever Coffee Wet factory in the Okapa District of Eastern Highlands Province was launched recently by the Nayatauro Coffee Growers Association recently.

Coffee Industry Corporation (CIC), Chief Executive Officer Mr. Navi Anis while launching the wet factory said that, the success of the project is a result of self reliant coffee farmers who are willing to cooperate and work self-reliantly to bring development into their community.

Mr. Anis said CIC is now focusing on supporting farmers who are willing to help themselves by initiating and implementing innovative ideas of coffee farming and marketing. He said CIC is ready to build coffee nurseries and assist the farmers to extend their coffee gardens to supply the wet factory.

The Wet Factory was designed and built at a cost of about K20, 000.00 by CIC’s Mechanical Engineer, Mr. Nosare Maika. It is part of a big and on-going program within CIC to empower coffee farmers with various life skills and coffee training program, starting with the ‘Participatory Rural Appraisal Program’ (PRAP).

The launch also coincided with the launching of a 1.2 km road by East Okapa LLG President Mr. Andrew Sarepo on behalf of Okapa MP, Hon. Bonny Oveyara and a water pump by the Okapa LLG Manager, Mr. Patrick Osborne. The road connects the Wet factory to the Okapa Station and was built by the Emasa Community members using their physical labour for about four months.

Mr. Oveyara who witnessed the all the three launching strongly expressed to the people to be self reliant and hard working in order to attract help from government and other NGO organizations. “This project is a good one and we will build two or three more to cater for other communities in the Okapa Districts,” said Hon. Oveyara.

He indicated his support to the Emasa community once his office receives the government promised NADP fund of K1million for his district.
