Bris Kanda Partners with CIC (23/03/2010)

Bris Kanda Incorporation has signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with the Coffee Industry Corporation (CIC) Ltd with the aim to improve sustainability of the rural population of Huon Gulf electorate in the Morobe Province through coffee production.

Bris Kanda is a non-governmental organization funded by the New Zealand AID and facilitates Rural Enterprise Development. It is aimed at building income generation opportunities for the marginalised in the Huon District. Bris Kanda aims to reinforce community stewardship of the environment by linking conservation to the livelihoods of people.

Emphasizing the much publicized concept of Private-Public Partnership (PPP), the cooperation between the two parties is yet another way forward for coffee growers in the Huon electorate.  The strategic alliance was forged to bring about improved and sustainable coffee extension knowledge to growers.

CIC is statutorily mandated to provide effective extension services to the coffee industry of PNG. Its output-based grower services mechanism is compatible with “like-minded” organizations as Bris Kanda for mutual utilization of knowledge, skills, and resources.

The MOA hopes to see Huon Gulf growers bring high quality coffee to market consistently, attain premium price as an environmentally friendly ‘Specialty product’ and by the end of the project, establish a sustainable system to ensure ‘traceability’ and ‘transparency’  in transporting and sale of the electorate’s coffee.

The CIC will provide the expertise while growers would take on the responsibilities and ownership of projects being initiated under the MOA. The coffee extension technology transfer is the integral part of the new work culture empowering farmers to become self-reliant and viable in mastering coffee as an employer and a business. Morobe’s Huon district should see an increase in coffee production outturn as a result of growers being well informed on the importance of coffee in the economy and for their livelihoods.
Bris Kanda and CIC will provide capacity-building support and re-align strategies focused on broadening the coffee development plans and visions for the benefit of the coffee growers in Huon electorate.

A coffee development planning workshop held last week held saw Huon farmers identifying constraints along their coffee production chain. CIC and Bris Kanda are determined to consolidate programs that are relevant to farmer needs.
