CIC Projects

The Coffee Industry Corporation has over the years designed and implemented projects which have benefited the coffee industry of Papua New Guinea. These projects include infrastructure and capacity development in support of research and extension programs. The majority of the funding for these projects have either been sourced internally for small-scale projects or funded externally through donor agencies for larger projects.

Government Assistance

The Government has a major role to play in the funding of coffee research and extension, but has abdicated this role to the industry since 1997.  The GoPNG has recently developed and launched the National Agriculture Development Plan (NADP) with which Government funding will be allocated for the agriculture sector, of which coffee is an integral focus of this plan. CIC has thereby designed projects to be covered under the plan for the next ten years.

Donors

As for donors, only the European Union (EU) has been funding coffee projects during the past six years.  The EU continues to show interest in maintaining its support to the industry through the funding of various projects.  Currently the EU has approved K3.5m worth of coffee projects managed by the CIC.  A further K2.6m is said to be available to the industry. CIC will do its utmost to access these funds for the benefit of the industry.

Recently AusAID has shown great interest in funding CIC projectsshade drying project
under the Agricultural Research and Development Support Facility.
Technical Assistance and Capacity Building assistance will come
from the National Agricultural Research System Component whilst funding for small projects will come from Agricultural Innovations
Grant Scheme. It is estimated that CIC will receive only K1.0m under this program for the next five years.

Furthermore, ACIAR is supporting Coffee Research projects in the
areas of crop protection and post harvest and market chain analysis
on various marketing systems. For the next three years CIC will
receive a total of K1.38m from these projects.

The CIC has built up its capacity to develop projects and access Government and donor projects funding by creating a project office since September 2003. This office will continue to play a vital role in accessing project funding, which will relieve the CIC from being forced to fund major projects from its own dwindling resources.
